Volunteer Role: Boarders Needed!...to provide temporary accommodation for a dog at home on behalf of Guide Dogs

Volunteer Role: Boarder

To provide temporary accommodation for a dog at home on behalf of Guide Dogs, and to comply with the Boarders Agreement in relation to the welfare and handling of the dog or puppy.

Location: At home

There are several types of boarding opportunities:

1. During Training, boarding is overnight and at weekends from the age of one
• Early Training Boarders take younger dogs for 16 weeks
• Advanced Training Boarders take dogs for the next 10 weeks
In some cases it is possible to board for the entire 26 weeks training period

2. Puppy Boarders, Brood Bitch and Stud Dog Boarders support those volunteers who home puppies or breeding dogs full time, for example taking the dog full time if a volunteer is not able to take it on holiday or they are taken ill.

3. Client boarders board working dogs for short periods full time on those occasions clients are unable to make their own arrangements

4. At some sites a small number of Respite Boarders support teams when we need someone to care for dogs unexpectedly. This is for varying periods, for example taking dogs full time if they don’t settle in kennels, are unwell or they are withdrawn from training.

What does the role involve?
• Training boarders need to drop off their dogs 8-9am and pick up 5-6pm at a Guide Dogs site or a site near a trainers’ home. Local teams can discuss details and maximum travel time possible.
• Willing to provide a welcoming and safe environment for a dog or puppy for the time required. Providing a consistent home is particularly important for our dogs in training
• Ensuring the dog or puppy is fed and exercised as directed
• Embedding the same behaviour and commands as your supervisor
• In the event of an emergency, ensure the dog or puppy receives veterinary care and Guide Dogs is informed immediately.

What skills or experience are required?
• All boarders will be required to attend training sessions. Those handling younger and larger/more active dogs need more training
• Enjoy working with dogs and have suitable accommodation
• Perseverance to help support the training of the dogs
• Good communication skills

What will I get out of it?
• Increase in dog knowledge and welfare
• Opportunity to care for and have the companionship of a dog for evenings and weekends or for short periods of time
• The satisfaction that you are part of a committed team with a pivotal role in providing guide dogs that enable blind and partially-sighted people to enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.

What support or training will I get?
• Regular and ongoing support and training from your supervisor
• Basic induction to Guide Dogs and to the role
• All food, veterinary costs and the provision of equipment

Will I need to do a CRB check? No

This role is managed by: Mobility Instructor/Trainer/ Puppy Training Supervisor

Minimum Age: 18

The future shape of welfare benefits in Scotland

the view from the employability sector

‘we need to be clear on what the purpose(s) of a benefits system should be, and what specific outcomes it should aim to achieve’ (from the Call for Evidence)

Date and time: 9.30 – 12.30. Friday 6 December
Venue: Britannia Building, Glasgow Caledonian University, Cowcaddens Rd, Glasgow

The Expert Working Group on Welfare set up by the Scottish Government has issued a Call for Evidence on ‘the principles which could underpin a benefits system for people of working age in an independent Scotland’ with a deadline of13 December. For further details, please see http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/0043/00434558.pdf (PDF 134KB).

In debates about the purposes of the benefits system, helping people enter work often features alongside reducing poverty and providing social security. Employability providers have a wealth of understanding of the interaction between the benefits system and employment; and many in the sector have views on how policy changes can make their job easier or harder.

This event is an opportunity for the employability sector to consider the questions asked in the call for evidence, aided by expert commentary and a structured programme. It is intended to assist those who are thinking of making a submission. In addition the event will be written up and made available to the Expert Group on Welfare, which is supporting the costs of the event.

Whatever your views on the constitution, this is a debate which will inform policy development either side of the referendum in September 2014.

Speaker: Dr Colin Lindsay, Strathclyde University
Colin has been researching and teaching on employment, skills and social policy for more than thirteen years. His most recent book is ‘Disability benefits, welfare reform and employment policy’ (co-edited with Donald Houston, Palgrave Macmillan, 2013).

Facilitator and Rapporteur: Matthew Crighton, Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion

This event is Free, but booking is necessary.
Enquiries: Matthew Crighton, 0131 557 6075..

SCVO Credit Union

Credit unions offer an alternative to payday lenders – not necessarily by competing in the short term loan market, but by encouraging a more responsible approach to money.

Short term loans – repayable in full plus interest within a month – are rarely truly affordable. Credit union loans are repaid in affordable instalments spread over a longer period.

· As member-owned co-operatives, a credit union’s only interest is in the financial wellbeing of its members – not maximising profits for external shareholders and investors.

· A credit union will offer a loan appropriate to your circumstances which you can really afford to repay.

· The best way to get a fast loan from a credit union is to join today and start building up a savings habit.

· Credit unions can help you plan for future expenses. Now is a good time to start saving for summer holidays or Christmas 2014.

If you have any questions or wish further advice about joining Scvo Credit Union please email thomas.mcvay@scvo.org.uk

STAY WARM, STAY WELL - FREE TRAINING FOR FRONT LINE STAFF

Fuel poverty is a major problem in Scotland. More than one in three people can’t afford to heat their homes to an adequate level. For those living in fuel poverty, the consequences are ill health, discomfort and debt. It often means choosing between heating and eating.

Energy Action Scotland (EAS) campaigns for an end to fuel poverty and works to turn cold, damp houses into warm, dry homes. EAS has recently secured funding from SSE to provide training, free of charge, to front line staff responsible for looking after the health, wellbeing and social welfare of vulnerable clients. This energy efficiency training will enable a range of organisations to provide appropriate and effective advice and information to clients, helping them to obtain all the help and support that’s available.

The following free training is available:

(Inverness: 25 February 2014)

• One day fuel poverty/energy efficiency training
Places are available on a first come, first served basis. These courses will be delivered in a wide range of locations throughout Scotland. For organisations with a number of staff EAS can provide the training in their own premises. In order to ensure optimum access to this training, EAS will pay (or contribute towards) travel costs for participants where appropriate. Participants will receive a certificate for Continued Personal Development (CPD) purposes.

• One week Energy Awareness, City & Guilds (Level 3)
A limited number of places will be available to those completing the one day training. This training will be delivered from a central location. Please note that EAS will pay (or contribute significantly towards) both travel and subsistence costs where appropriate. Successful candidates will receive a City & Guilds Certificate which can be used for Continued Personal Development (CPD) purposes.

For further information or to register interest, please contact Rose Ann Porteous via email at rose-ann.porteous@eas.org.uk or telephone 0141 226 3064

SCVO and Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU)

Is reducing health inequality about improving health services, or realising our social and economic rights?"

Join SCVO and Glasgow Caledonian University for an informed and challenging debate exploring the role of human rights in reducing health inequality.
Date: Thursday 28th November, 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Venue: The Mews, Edinburgh (NASUWT, 35 Young Street North Lane, EH2 4JD)

What's the debate about?

SCVO and Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) are continuing our series of thought-provoking human rights debates in conjunction with our work-based Masters in Citizenship and Human Rights programme.
In this next debate we will be focusing on health inequality, an area of increasing concern for Scotland with the gap in levels of health and life expectancy between the richest and poorest people in our society continuing to widen.
We will debate the medical and social models of improving health, and explore the role that realising our social and economic human rights (including our right to an adequate standard of living, social security, employment, education and housing) has to play in addressing the root causes of health inequality in Scotland.
  • Hear from our debate panellists as they draw on their own views and experiences
  • Consider the role human rights has to play in reducing health inequality
  • Leave with new ideas to reflect on within our organisations
  • Contribute to and inform human rights research and programme development at Glasgow Caledonian University

How can I book?

Places are free but limited.  To book your place visit our online booking form.

SEMINAR/WORKSHOP

THE GIFT OF AGEING

SATURDAY 30 NOVEMBER 2013

May I extend an invitation to attend a Seminar/workshop on Saturday 30 November 2013 at the Inverness Town House Inverness.

The theme of the day is the gift of ageing and it will take the form of an exploration of  challenges of growing old. Whilst ageing is not a topic that most people particularly enjoy it is something that we all share. We are all ageing all the time and as we age we need to make changes and tolerate alterations to our lives and our ways of living in the world. Ageing is both a challenge and joy and the more we think about it and discuss it the more we can help ourselves and others as well.

The workshop will look at our own ageing and think about some of the research  around successful ageing and the spiritual nature of ageing. It will be interactive and fun and hopefully give you some positive insights and useful information to think about. It is anticipated that the attendance of people from various faiths will give added value to the discussions.
It will be led by Dr Harriet Mowat who is both a practitioner and researcher in this area of work

There will be no charge for attending but people should bring a pack lunch. The day commences with registration 10.30am for an 11.00am start and should end at 3.30am.

Booking a place is essential by contacting  www.invernessinterfaith.com

I look forward to seeing you at the event

http://glasgow2014.com/queens-baton-relay/pass-baton

As you will be aware we have been asking for your help to find up to 4,000 batonbearers to carry the baton around Scotland on the final leg of its journey. The nomination process is well underway but you only have until 5pm on 22 November 2013 to make a nomination.
Who have you nominated?
Remember you can nominate work colleagues, family members, friends or anyone who does a good job in your community. Perhaps they lend a helping hand to others, do voluntary work or are just good role models. It doesn’t matter, as long as they’ve made a difference to a local community in Scotland and you can nominate as many local champions as you like!  The nomination process is simple – you will be asked to write, in no more than 100 words, why the person you are nominating deserves the chance to carry the baton.
For more information on the selection criteria and to find out how to nominate watch our short video http://glasgow2014.com/video/make-local-champion-feel-commonwealth-champion
or go to our website
 http://glasgow2014.com/queens-baton-relay/pass-baton
And remember, if you are nominating someone or have been nominated yourself, make sure the applications are completed by 5pm on 22 November 2013.
Nominate now, and give Scotland’s local champions a thank you they’ll never forget.

Scottish Rural Action, the organisation set up recently to organise the first Scottish Rural Parliament, is seeking to recruit a Co-ordinator.

Rural Parliament Coordinator

Job Type:Full time
Closing date:17 November 2013
Location:Location subject to agreement

Scottish Rural Action has received funding from the Scottish Government to deliver an exciting new initiative for rural Scotland. The Rural Parliament will provide those who live and work in Scotland’s rural communities with an opportunity to come together, to consider rural priorities with a wide range of public bodies, to agree specific policy proposals and in due course, present these to the appropriate bodies. The Rural Parliament will also be a major celebration of rural Scotland, its people, places, products and achievements.

Regards,
