Older People Taking Action

Older People Taking Action

  • Spectrum Centre, Inverness
  • 22nd October
  • 10.30am - 3.00pm
Outside the Box Development Support, the Highlands and Islands Equality Forum (HIEF) and Highland Senior Citizens Network (HSCN) have teamed up for this free event to explore how community led action can remove the barriers to older people's wellbeing in the Highlands.

What is the event about?

This event is not about identifying the barriers faced by older people - these have already been well discussed. It is about learning from community led actions already being taken to remove these barriers, identifying the support that is available, and exploring new ideas together.
  • Find out about the support available from Outside the Box, HSCN and HIEF
  • Learn about some of the work already happening to improve the lives of older people around 'digital exclusion' (access to computers, internet etc.) and older men's health
  • Share ideas and experiences and propose solutions

Who should attend?

People involved, or interested, in community led services that support older people, and those who run or fund services for older people. Priority will be given to third sector organisations and community groups.

A Rare Opportunity for Inverness Businesses

Whilst there was a lot of publicity earlier this year on Mary Portas’ report on the “Future of the High Street” in England, more important for local businesses is the recently published National Review of Scottish Town Centres which makes a series of recommendations which could  benefit you the City Centre businesses and the wider Scottish economy.

As we know Scotland’s town and city centres are facing challenging times and so BID are delighted to offer you the unique opportunity to hear from Malcolm Fraser (Chair of the Review Group) and feedback to him your thoughts on how to strengthen the business economy.

The meeting will also be attended by representatives of the Highland Council & you will have the opportunity to tell them what you feel Inverness City Centre needs.

Venue:                Mercure Hotel, Church Street, Inverness

Date:                   Wednesday 18th September 2013 - 5.45pm for 6pm until 7pm

Speaker:            Malcolm Fraser – Chair of “Scotland’s National Review of Town Centres”

Come along and hear Malcolm talk about the key recommendations and proposals from the Review which include:

Ø    A ‘town centre first’ principle whereby public bodies must consider how they can support town centres before allowing development elsewhere
Ø    Working with housing providers to bring empty town centre properties back into use as affordable housing
Ø    A town centre focus and the potential local business rates incentivisation schemes
Ø    A recommendation that public bodies must fully consider the impact of any proposals to relocate services out of town centres
Ø    Broadening the appeal of town centres with a mix of leisure, public facilities and homes

You can download a full copy the Review from the Scottish Government’s website via this link: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Built-Environment/regeneration/town-centres/review)

Book now to hear how Malcolm sees the National Review re-energising our city centre!

The Event starts at 5.45pm for 6pm finishing by 7pm.  As always the event and refreshments are complimentary.  We do hope that you will be able to join us.

Mike Smith, BID Manager              RSVP

Health Inequality Forum

Health Inequality Forum

Invitation to first meeting

·  10.30am - 12.30pm
·  Fairways House, Fairways Business Park, Inverness. IV2 6AA
·  Tuesday 24th September
The Highlands and Islands Equality Forum (HIEF) and the Highlands Third Sector Partnership (HTSP) are inviting members of the third sector in Highland to get involved in a new health inequality focussed forum. The forum will support third sector organisations and community groups in their work to reduce health inequality in Highland.

What will the Health Inequality Forum do?

Exactly how the forum develops will be guided by the people who get involved, but it is intended to be an opportunity for a more organised and collaborative approach to reducing health inequality from within the Highland third sector in order that we can:
1. Strengthen the great work that is already happening by sharing ideas and experiences and exploring new opportunities to work together.
2. Ensure effective involvement in the design and delivery of health and social care services through Highland community planning and public sector partnership working.

Who should get involved?

Third sector organisations, community groups and individuals active in their community in Highland.

How can I get involved?

Places at this meeting will be limited, so if you would like to attend please complete our short online registration form.
However, even if you can't attend the meeting you can still be involved - please get in contact with Matt Tyrer, HIEF Project Leader, to find out more.

Social Enterprise Academy August Update

Social Enterprises are well known for creating opportunities for young people to gain work experience and take their first steps into employment. There's a supporting initiative developed by Skills Development Scotland that's also becoming better known in the sector.

The Certificate of Work Readiness provides a real boost for young people who need structure and support to get ready for employment. Please take a look and check out the
regional events happening over the next week.
Certificate of Work Readiness Programme
More than 40 young people will have the chance to get a vital first foot on the employment ladder through an initiative launched by Skills Development Scotland, which opens up work placement opportunities in the social enterprise sector.

The Certificate of Work Readiness programme is designed as a perfect fit with one of the core purposes of social enterprises, to have a positive impact on the lives of people. Skills Development Scotland believes it will help young people find jobs in the social enterprise sector and raise awareness of the positive developments being undertaken by social enterprises.

The Social Enterprise Academy and the Social Learning Company are working together to raise awareness of the programme and have organised regional events for social enterprises that would like to know more.

Sparks of social enterprise at the Ironworks

Both culturally and geographically, the Ironworks is at the centre of the Highland community. It’s also at the heart of the community, with several community groups using the Inverness venue from toddlers’ groups to blood donors. Located right in the middle of the city and with a reach into so many families, its prime territory for social enterprise to work.

From September 10th a group of young people will spend 12 days working together at the Ironworks to design and develop a new social enterprise venture. Supported by two Academy tutors with inputs from ironworks staff, the product or service delivered will be their own choice. Being based at a venue like the Ironworks, creativity and inspiration shouldn’t be too far away.

In one sense the programme is entirely unpredictable. We don’t know what the young people will come up with ... given the venue it might have something to do with music, creativity or performance, but that’s up to the young people.

Our role is to widen the learners’ horizons to the possibilities of social enterprise, then drop a spark of inspiration and let it take light. What we do know is that the young people will have a memorable learning journey, which might just take them to a social enterprise future.
